We are pleased to announce that Faculty of Agriculture UGM is now offering Summer Course on Sustainable Tropical Agriculture 2024: Delicious Tale from Bean to Bar. The course is scheduled to take place from 15 July until 23 August 2024. We believe that all participants would greatly benefit from this comprehensive program, designed to foster academic exchange, collaboration, and hands-on experience in sustainable tropical agricultural practices. As a highlight, the Summer Course is equivalent to 3 (three) credits.
Embark on a transformative journey into the heart of sustainable tropical agriculture with our immersive Summer Course, enriched by captivating field trips to an Agricultural Farm, Cocoa Plantation, and Chocolate Factory. These excursions offer participants hands-on experience, bridging theoretical knowledge with practical insights into the entire value chain of tropical agriculture.
Throughout the course, participants will explore a diverse array of topics essential for thriving in tropical agricultural landscape. There are 5 (five) topics to be discussed:
- Sustainable Tropical Agriculture
- Climate-Resilient Farming in the Tropics
- Integrated Smallholder Plantations
- Innovative and Emerging Agricultural Technology and Management
- Socio-Economic and Cultural Dimensions in Tropical Agriculture
Complementing classroom sessions, the field trips will immerse participants in the daily operations of agricultural farms and cocoa plantations, where they will engage with farmers and observe sustainable farming techniques firsthand. Guided by expert facilitators, participants will learn about agroforestry systems, soil conservation practices, and biodiversity conservation efforts tailored to tropical environments.
The highlight of the field trips will be the visit to a local chocolate factory, where participants will trace the journey of cocoa from plantation to finished product. Through interactive tours and demonstrations, participants will gain insights into post-harvest processing techniques, quality control measures, and value addition in the chocolate industry.
These immersive experiences will not only deepen participants’ understanding of sustainable tropical agriculture but also foster meaningful connections with local communities and ecosystems. By bridging theory with real-world application, the field trips enhance participants’ ability to critically analyze agricultural practices and inspire innovative solutions to address pressing environmental and social challenges.
